Structured physiotherapy starting on day 1 post-op is critical for long-term joint replacement success. Patients who follow a 12-week protocol regain 95% of normal function; those who skip rehab plateau at 60–70%.
Hospital phase (Day 0–3)
Bedside exercises start within hours of surgery — ankle pumps, quadriceps sets and assisted knee bending.
Walking with a walker begins on day 1.
Home phase (Week 1–6)
Daily home exercises plus 3 supervised physio sessions a week. Focus on range of motion, swelling control and progressive walking distance.
Strengthening phase (Week 6–12)
Closed-chain strengthening, stair climbing, stationary cycling, and balance training.
By the end of 12 weeks, most patients are walking 5+ km a day comfortably.
