What is it?
Shoulder replacement resurfaces the damaged ball and socket of the shoulder with a long-lasting implant — performed as anatomic (total) or reverse depending on rotator cuff status.
Anatomic total shoulder replacement is ideal for arthritis with an intact rotator cuff. Reverse shoulder replacement is used when the rotator cuff is torn or irreparable, switching the ball and socket to let the deltoid power the arm. Robotic planning ensures perfect glenoid (socket) angle and humeral (ball) alignment — the most critical factor for long implant life.
Symptoms — when do you need it?
Severe shoulder pain, stiffness and inability to lift the arm often signal advanced arthritis or cuff arthropathy.
- Constant shoulder pain even at rest
- Difficulty lifting or rotating the arm
- Stiffness and loss of overhead reach
- Pain disturbing sleep
- Failed conservative treatment and injections
- Severe arthritis or rotator cuff arthropathy on imaging
The procedure
Approximately 90–120 minutes under regional or general anaesthesia.
- CT-based 3D planning of glenoid and humeral implants
- Small incision over the front of the shoulder
- Robotic/navigation-guided bone preparation
- Anatomic or reverse implant fitted with sub-millimetre accuracy
- Wound closed; arm placed in a sling, early rehab begins
Benefits
Precise implant placement, restored motion, less pain and longer-lasting results.
- Sub-millimetre glenoid placement
- Pain-free overhead movement restored
- Lower risk of implant loosening
- Smaller incision and faster healing
- Implants lasting 15–20+ years
- Suitable even with rotator cuff tears (reverse)
Recovery timeline
Sling for 4 weeks, light activity in 6 weeks, full recovery in 3–4 months.
Procedure completed in 60–120 minutes.
Stand and take a few assisted steps.
Walk independently with support and go home.
Climb stairs and resume light daily activity.
Drive, work, walk long distances comfortably.
Return to sports, travel and high-activity life.
