Total hip replacement (THR) replaces the worn ball and socket with a titanium stem, ceramic head, and polyethylene liner. Modern robotic THR delivers perfect leg length, lowest dislocation risk and 20–25+ year implant survival.
Why hip replacement?
Severe osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis (AVN), rheumatoid arthritis, hip fractures and developmental hip dysplasia are the leading indications.
If hip pain disturbs sleep, makes putting on shoes painful, or limits walking under 500 metres — it's time to consider surgery.
Direct anterior vs. posterior approach
Direct anterior (DAA) preserves all hip muscles and offers fastest early recovery, but is technically demanding.
Posterior approach gives excellent visualisation and is the most commonly used worldwide. With modern repair techniques, dislocation risk is under 1%.
Recovery and lifestyle
Walk within 24 hours, discharge in 2–3 days, drive at 3–4 weeks, full activity at 6–8 weeks.
Long-term, you can swim, cycle, walk, hike and travel without restriction.
